Liverpool FC chairman Tom Werner said that he’s determined to see Premier League (EPL) matches played in New York and other major cities like Tokyo and Rio.
Although there are no current plans for these so-called “out of territory” matches, FIFA’s decision to settle a court case in New York has reopened the possibility. FIFA is reviewing rules that prevent domestic league games from being played abroad, with a panel expected to advise on specific amendments to the rules.
Werner acknowledged potential fan resistance and suggested making overseas matches attractive by offering affordable travel and accommodations for local fans. Werner’s comments were generally met with fierce backlash on social media from fans who want all matches to remain in the UK.
Despite Werner’s enthusiasm, Liverpool owner John Henry stated that he does not support the plans. Additionally, the Liverpool FC Supporters Board confirmed that the idea is not yet under consideration, and emphasized that any such decision would involve fan feedback.
