Despite calls to change its name again, Washington’s new ownership indicated that it plans to remain The Commanders for the foreseeable future. Co-owner Marjorie Harris told reporters that the organization has higher priority matters to address before it considers yet another rebranding.
Washington’s franchise was controversially known as the “Redskins” until 2020, after mounting pressure forced the previous owner, Dan Snyder, to abandon the name. The team was then generically referred to as the “Washington Football Team” for two years until Snyder eventually went with “Commanders” as the team’s official nickname. According to a recent poll from the Washington Post, most DC-area sports fans (54%) say they either dislike or hate the new name. The main complaints are that it’s generic, corny, and has no connection to the franchise.
