New York Liberty wins its first WNBA title in overtime of Game 5

After 28 years and 6 WNBA Finals appearances, the New York Liberty have finally pulled it off. The franchise claimed its first WNBA title with a 67-62 overtime victory in Game 5 against the Minnesota Lynx.

Nyara Sabally, typically a role player, was the unexpected star with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and a game-saving block in overtime against Lynx star Napheesa Collier. Sabally averaged only 2.8 points in the Finals before Game 5,  but earned high praise from teammate Breanna Stewart for being the spark the team needed. Stewart, the two-time WNBA Finals MVP, forced overtime with 2 clutch free throws in the final seconds of regulation, finishing the game with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Power forward Jonquel Jones led New York with 17 points and 6 rebounds and was named the Finals’ MVP.

Following the victory, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that City Hall and other landmarks would be lit in seafoam green to honor the Liberty, and that a parade would be held to celebrate the team’s historic win.
